Much has been written about cellulite, that eternal scourge of women, but few things really help. 

Science and technology have also brought advances in this area. For some years now, the technology has existed to give a LASTING effect of reducing the level of cellulite after just ONE treatment. Profound Candela is the only radiofrequency microneedling that is FDA approved for facial and body therapies.

Skin rejuvenation

Profound is a radiofrequency current therapy known to many as a method of skin rejuvenation. The radiofrequency current is delivered to the skin using thin, insulated needles, at a specific time and temperature. If a handpiece is used that works up to 2 mm deep, this causes the skin to regenerate by stimulating the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Profound is used to rejuvenate the skin of the face and neck, with a wrinkle-reducing effect in 100% of all patients after just one treatment.

Cellulite reduction

The needles of the Profound device (SubQ nozzle) reach the subcutaneous fat and the connective tissue bands that cause the unevenness on the skin’s surface known as cellulite. The energy of the radiofrequency current dissolves the bands of connective tissue located between the fat cells, releasing them while simultaneously increasing the tone of the surrounding skin. This smooths out the unevenness of the cellulite areas on the thighs, flanks and buttocks, making it smoother.

Effectiveness of Profound in removing cellulite

The effect of Profound cellulite therapy is proven by studies. In 2018, they published a study on 50 women (aged 25 to 63 years) with cellulite levels II and III (according to the Nurnberger-Muller scale), who underwent one treatment with Profound and the SubQ.

The result was assessed after six months.

• 94% of the study participants (females) had an improvement in the appearance of cellulite, which was noticeable in the comparison photo.
• Three quarters of the study participants were satisfied with the effect.
• All showed a marked reduction in hollows and protrusions.
• The post-procedure symptoms (swelling and redness) resolved after 2 days.
• None of the participants had side effects.

What are the side effects of Profound Cellulite Therapy?

After the procedure, there is redness and swelling of the skin, bruising, which is mild in intensity and disappears within a few days without treatment.

How soon can I return to my daily activities?

This is usually possible 24 hours after the procedure. At the time of the examination, you will discuss your individual post-procedure skin care plan with your doctor.

How many treatments are needed to see an effect on cellulite reduction?

What is “natural” about Profound therapy?

Other cellulite therapy options

There are many devices that promise to reduce cellulite – various lasers, surface-acting radiofrequency, vacuum, massage… All these methods are characterised by the need to repeat the procedures several times (more than 5-10 times). These approaches mainly work on improving skin tone, which has little effect on the appearance of cellulite, and have NO long-term effect on cellulite. All of the above technologies only work on the top layers of the skin, they do not work deep in the subcutaneous tissue where the cause of cellulite lies. Profound with the SubQ handpiece reaches almost 6 mm below the surface of the skin, so it can work effectively on cellulite.

Profound vs. cellulite creams

Short answer – they do not work!

Anti-cellulite creams can cost upwards of €100, but there is no scientific evidence that they are effective. They mostly contain antioxidants, caffeine, retinol, which have a beneficial effect on the skin, but none on the causes of cellulite deep in the subcutaneous tissue. For the minimal effect that anti-cellulite creams have on the skin, they must be used indefinitely to maintain the effect.

Benefits of Profound over other effective cellulite reduction methods

Profound vs. liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that is rarely used to improve cellulite. It has side effects that normally appear with the use of surgical methods and anaesthesiology, a long recovery time and the possibility of skin irregularities.

Profound vs. Cellfina

Cellfina is a device in which a vacuum is applied to the skin under local anaesthetic and a small blade is placed under the skin to cut the connective bands in the subcutaneous tissue that cause cellulite. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and bruising after the procedure is common. The recovery period is similar to that after surgery. The procedure does not improve skin tone as Profound does, as it is a mechanical method.

Profound vs. Cellulaze

Cellulaze is a laser procedure performed under local anaesthesia. A laser tip is inserted under the skin through a small incision, where the energy of the laser beam melts the fat and cuts the connective tissue bands. The procedure is technically more demanding and has a longer recovery period than Profound, with the possibility of burns, scarring and unevenness.

Profound vs. Velashape III

VelaShape III is a device that works by using the mechanical energy of massage and vacuum, radiofrequency current and infrared red light. All three technologies interact to heat the skin and subcutaneous tissue, increase blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, and accelerate the metabolism of adipose tissue, resulting in a reduction in the volume of fat cells.

The reduction in fat cell size, lymphatic drainage and contraction of the subcutaneous connective tissue allow the formation of reduced fat deposits in the subcutaneous tissue, which reduces the appearance of cellulite in the treatment area (abdominal or leg circumference). To achieve the maximum effect, 3-6 repetitions of the treatment are needed and maintenance is required every 3 months.
