Improving skin tone

The decline in skin tone is caused by the age-related reduction of collagen and elastin in the skin. Further deterioration is caused by UV light from the sun and tanning beds, which directly damages collagen and elastin and increases their breakdown. A decreased amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin leads to the appearance of sagging and dry skin.

Skin toning has significantly advanced in recent years and non-invasive procedures, where energy is applied across the surface of the skin towards the subcutaneous tissue, can be used to achieve effective improvements in skin tone on the body and limbs.

Non-invasive procedures for improving skin tone include:

– non-ablative lasers (Matrix IR),

– ablative lasers (CO2RE),

– radiofrequency (Pellefirm),

– fractionated radiofrequency (Matrix RF, Morpheus8Profound).

Some of the procedures need to be repeated several times to achieve maximum effect.

The action of these devices is limited to deep and sufficient heating of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, resulting in an improvement in skin tone. The procedure causes an immediate shrinkage of collagen molecules and a long-term effect due to the stimulation of collagen production in the skin in specific skin cells – fibroblasts.

Minimally invasive procedures to improve skin tone are performed under local anaesthesia and by intervening with specialised probes in the subcutaneous tissue. Compared to the non-invasive procedures listed above, minimally invasive procedures are designed to improve advanced skin tone loss.

One of the most effective methods of improving skin tone is the use of bipolar radiofrequency current, which in most cases requires only one procedure (Accutite, Face Tite, Neck Tite, Body Tite). The handpiece of a device has a special design where one electrode is located under the dermis and the other on the surface of the skin. The target heating temperature is measured throughout the procedure at the electrode in the subcutaneous tissue and the one on the skin surface, where it does not exceed 42 °C. If the temperature rises, the device itself cuts off the energy supply and excessive heating, which could cause side effects. Several areas of the body (upper arms, abdomen, thighs) can be treated using handpieces (nozzles/attachment) of different sizes..

The monopolar radiofrequency current (Pellefirm) acts on subcutaneous fat by overheating, while intensively restoring skin tone. In suitable candidates, the effect is visible in a noticeable and rapid reduction of the volume of the upper arms, abdomen and thighs. MedContour interferential ultrasound has a similar effect. Both require several repetitions to achieve a long-lasting effect.

IMPORTANT: Consuming collagen powder, in drinks, in tablets does not increase the collagen content of the skin. The dietary substitutes contain animal collagen, which is completely broken down in the gastrointestinal tract into its basic building blocks, amino acids, which are then used in cell metabolism. No increase in the collagen content of the skin can be expected from the collagen we consume. It is produced daily in the cells of the dermis, the fibroblasts, whose activity can be stimulated by various medical approaches.
