miraDry® permanently removes sweat glands and odour glands in the underarms to the point that deodorants or antiperspirants are no longer needed. 

miraDry® is the only non-surgical method approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to eliminate underarm sweating, and it remains the only officially approved procedure of its kind. The non-invasive miraDry® procedure, which works using electromagnetic energy, targets heat to the sweat glands in the armpits and destroys them.

 

Treatment of excessive underarm sweating

Body temperature is naturally regulated by sweating. This is how we dissipate excess heat by evaporating water from the surface of the skin. However, sweating, especially excessive sweating, can be distracting in everyday activities, social and work life. Many miraDry® treatments around the world have shown that after just two treatments, sweating is reduced by as much as 82%, so it is no longer bothersome and odour is eliminated. The effectiveness of the technology is comparable to surgery to reduce underarm sweating, as a 100 % reduction cannot be achieved by any method and is not desirable as it would cause excessively dry and itchy skin.

There are two to four million sweat glands distributed all over our bodies. Of these, only about two per cent are found under the armpits, so removing them does not affect the body’s ability to cool itself. Since miraDry® works in a targeted way and the nerves are left intact, there is no so-called compensatory sweating in other parts of the body, as is the case in up to half of certain surgical procedures to treat sweating.

Does miraDry® also eliminate underarm hair?

As miraDry® technology works deep in the subcutaneous tissue, where the hair follicles are located next to the sweat glands, up to 70% of all hair, dark, light, grey, is removed in one treatment. By comparison, laser treatment usually removes 80 per cent of hair after just six treatments, and solely if it is dark enough. Along with reduced underarm sweating, hair removal with miraDry® is the only lasting side effect of this treatment.

How miraDry® works

The miraWave™ technology generates controlled heat at the area where the sweat glands are located and safely removes them.

• When correctly positioned, the handpiece is activated and you will feel a slight pull from the vacuum. This brings the skin and the subcutaneous sweat glands closer to the surface of the handpiece, allowing a greater effect.
• The miraWave energy is released, which acts on the sweat glands and deliberately overheats them to the point where they no longer function.
• As the attachment cools the epidermis, the skin is protected from the microwaves.

Number of repetitions

People with normal underarm sweating need only one treatment, while those diagnosed with primary axillary hyperhidrosis need two. In both cases, the effect is permanent.

Duration of the miraDry® treatment

The miraDry® treatments takes about an hour and a half, and the results are visible as soon as you finish. The miraDry® procedure at Derma Center Maribor is performed by a doctor who will also advise you on the most appropriate basic therapy for healing the skin after the procedure.

Who do we recommend miraDry® for?

You can opt for miraDry® therapy if you sweat in your armpits only occasionally, yet it hinders you in your work and social interactions, mainly due to stains on your clothes, unpleasant smell or if you do not want to use antiperspirants. It is furthermore suitable for people with a more severe form of underarm sweating called primary axillary hyperhidrosis. The latter is characterised by excessive sweating of the underarms, where the sweating is constant and not related to physical exertion or mental stress. The action of antiperspirants in these people is short-lived or completely ineffective. In all cases, you must be over 18 years of age.

What time of the year is the right time to do the miraDry® procedure?

The procedure can be performed at any time of the year, regardless of the outside temperature and the level of perspiration.

How long does it take to recover?

The day after the procedure, it is necessary to rest and avoid strenuous work with the arms, such as lifting weights, driving a car, etc. However, lighter work can be done, such as reading books, working on the computer, taking a walk in nature, etc.

How painful is the miraDry® procedure?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during the procedure and the local anaesthesia will continue to counteract the pain for several hours after the procedure is complete. In addition, you should follow your doctor’s instructions on how to take care of your underarm skin after the miraDry® procedure to minimise the chance of discomfort or pain. In almost all cases of underarm sweating treated with miraDry® at our Derma Center so far, there has been no occurrence of pain lasting for several days after the procedure and (patients) have not required treatment with painkillers.
