Photorejuvenation is a non-invasive method that reduces the signs of ageing without damaging the epidermis.
Pulsed light of a wide spectrum of wavelengths penetrating the skin is absorbed by the haemoglobin of red blood cells and the skin pigment melanin. During the healing process, the damaged cells are removed from the body, which, after several repetitions, causes the redness and capillaries to disappear and the brown spots to fade. The pulsating light also penetrates deeper into the skin to stimulate the production of new collagen, which results in visible reduction of fine lines and scars that extend below skin level.
Who we recommend photorejuvenation for
Photorejuvenation is suitable for women and men of all ages with mild to moderate wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, fine veins (telangiectasias) or brown spots, so-called sun spots or age spots.
The procedure is not recommended for people with dark complexion or tanned skin, due to exposure to the sun or artificial sources of UV radiation (tanning beds) and after using self-tanning cream, patients with skin cancer and certain skin and systemic diseases, pregnant and breastfeeding women, persons prone to excessive scarring and those undergoing treatment with certain medications.
Warning
Before deciding to undergo photorejuvenation, you should consult an experienced dermatologist who specialises in various rejuvenation procedures. By virtue of their extensive knowledge of the methods, they will be able to recommend the procedure that best suits the type of skin lesion you want to remove, their location on your body, the degree of the defect and your skin type, your expectations, your age and any comorbidities, and will also be able to predict how your recovery will progress.
Procedure and changes
Prior to the procedure, the skin is cleansed, the eyes are protected with special goggles and a transparent gel is applied to allow the light from the handpiece to penetrate the skin. Most people feel a slight stinging sensation and when we are finished, we can reduce the discomfort with cold compresses. Most often, a mild redness is seen, which disappears after a few minutes or hours, but other post-procedure phenomena are rare. Pigmented patches darken slightly after the procedure and then gradually fade after a few days. The colour of the small veins also changes or fades, the surrounding area turns mildly red, and they disappear within two to three weeks at the latest. The formation of new collagen also reduces wrinkles and improves the appearance of the skin.
As photorejuvenation does not cause any visible micro-damages to the skin that need to heal, you can get back to your daily routine straight away.
Number of treatments
For a more lasting improvement and a rejuvenated appearance, you usually need at least three photorejuvenation treatments at intervals of two to four weeks, followed by a refresh after a year.
Suitable body parts
All parts of the body are suitable for photorejuvenation, except the immediate eye area. It is most commonly performed on the face, neck, backs of hands, chest, arms and legs.
