Oily skin

The oil or sebum on the surface of the skin plays an important role in establishing basic skin functions, such as maintaining the skin’s barrier function and preventing excessive water loss through the skin.

The skin is thus protected from external harmful substances and allergens thanks to the oily layer on its surface. The oily layer allows it to retain moisture in the top layer of the skin, so it does not look cracked and dry.  The oily protective layer on the surface of the skin is formed largely in the sebaceous glands and to a lesser extent in the cells of the epidermis. The sebum protects the skin from oxidative stress, as it contains vitamin E, and the acidic pH of the skin inhibits the growth of microbes. Excessive secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands is the main cause of oily skin. It is characterised by an oily glow and enlarged sebaceous gland ducts, often visible on the nose, cheeks and chin. The sebaceous glands are influenced by growth factors, hormones and retinoids. Stress is known to increase the secretion of sebum due to the action of certain hormones.  Oily skin is found in some dermatological diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, acne, rosacea and sebaceous hyperplasia.

Oily skin needs specific cosmetic preparations for basic therapy

When buying cosmetic products from pharmacies, stores or drugstores, users have to choose between “trillions” of products for oily skin, dry skin, combination skin or sensitive skin, so it is not surprising that problems arise. Interestingly, people with oily skin often think that their skin is dry, so they usually do not “find” the right cream for their face. Oily skin can also peel and feel tight after washing with water, giving the impression that these are problems associated with dry skin.

With a digital analysis of the facial skin, the Visia® machine and a dermatologist’s examination, it is possible to determine the type of your skin at the Derma Center Maribor and Rogaška and thus recommend products for the basic treatment of oily skin.

Such treatment can improve the appearance of oily skin, such as tightening pores, reducing oiliness and flaking, and prevent and/or treat inflammation that occurs in some dermatological conditions associated with oily skin.
