Enlarged pores are a problem often seen in people who have oily skin on their cheeks and nose.
Dilated pores are small depressions on the surface of the skin that contain one or more ducts of the sweat glands and sebaceous glands. They can occur at any age and increase with ageing.
What are enlarged pores caused by?
The responsible factor are the following:
- increased oiliness of the skin,
- the size of the hair follicles,
- use of cosmetics that cause blackheads,
- loss of skin elasticity due to ageing,
- skin damage caused by sun exposure.
Research into various factors has shown that enlarged pores are caused by oily skin, ageing and gender.
People who have naturally oily skin often have enlarged pores. When oil and dead cells from the epidermis accumulate on the surface of the skin, the pores appear larger than normal. Sometimes, small acne scars can mislead us when assessing the size of our pores. Pore size is not always related to the severity of acne. As the skin ages, it loses elasticity, which can cause the pores to enlarge. Sun damage, which accumulates over the years, also has a significant effect on the enlargement of the pores. Sun-damaged skin is thickened, which ultimately causes the skin around the pores to thicken and enlarge. The third main factor for enlarged pores is gender. Men often have larger pores than women. In women, hormonal changes increase the size of the pores. The influence of genes is an important factor affecting pore size. If one or both parents have enlarged pores, it is very likely that the offspring will also have enlarged pores.
What therapy works on enlarged pores?
Therapy aimed at preventing or narrowing enlarged pores, which is usually at least partially successful:
- avoiding creams that cause blackheads (greasy creams, oils, etc.),
- chemical peel with AHA acids,
- day and/or night cream with L-carnitine, niacinamide, vitamin A or almond/glycolic acid.
Certain medications that reduce oiliness of the skin also work to tighten the pores:
- some contraceptives and antiandrogens,
- spironolactone,
Dermatological treatments that act on the sebaceous glands that can effectively tighten pores include:
