Cellulite

The causes of cellulite are varied. It can be caused by metabolic disorders, poor diet and lifestyle, and is also more common in women due to differences in skin texture.

Genetic and hormonal influences are important, but changes in connective tissue in the intercellular space, microcirculation and various inflammatory conditions are equally common. The most important factors in the appearance of cellulite are hormones, the female sex hormone oestrogen being the most important, in addition to insulin, adrenaline, prolactin and thyroid hormones.

Genes and types of subcutaneous fat distribution are another vital factor. At the same time, cellulite is influenced by a predisposition to stagnation of the lymphatic circulation. Today’s fast-paced and stressful lifestyles lead to an increase in stress hormones, which are also linked to the formation of cellulite. Naturally, we cannot ignore another influence, that of time, since cellulite worsens over the years as the skin loses its elasticity. Furthermore, weight gain during pregnancy, inactive lifestyles, etc. represent another negative impact on the condition.

Cellulite, the uneven surface of the skin, is caused by the connective bands that attach the skin to the subcutaneous tissue and between which fat cells are located. An increase in these, stagnation of microcirculation, changes in the connective tissue between the fat cells and inflammation cause pressure on the skin from below, while the long connective bands pull downwards. The latter causes the appearance of bumps and indentations on the surface of the skin.

Cellulite most commonly affects the thighs, buttocks, abdomen, hips or upper arms. It is visible as dimples, bulges and skin deformities. Cellulite can occur in women with a slim and athletic figure, average weight or a stronger figure. There are several types of cellulite:

Type 1: Present upon kneading, otherwise not visible.

Type 2: Visible when standing, not visible when lying down.

Type 3: Visible in both lying and standing positions.

Cellulite reduction

Although some of the factors that lead to the development of cellulite are known, the underlying cause of cellulite is not understood and there is no therapy that can completely and permanently eliminate it. The basics are a change in sedentary lifestyle and normalisation of body weight, and there are many massage and cream providers on the market promising the impossible. When choosing a method, it is important to bear in mind that cellulite cannot be completely eliminated, but there are ways of successfully reducing the level of cellulite for a certain period of time.

Vela Shape III, which we use at Derma Center Maribor to reduce cellulite, is a modern, non-invasive and effective medical-aesthetic method. It works through the synergy between optical and electrical energy to reduce the visibility of cellulite, to reduce volume on problematic areas of the body and to improve skin tone. The method is FDA-certified for volume reduction on the abdomen.

Profound is a device that uses a fractional radiofrequency current. Isolated needles on the device’s tip heat the deep layer of skin and subcutaneous tissue to the extent required to generate new collagen and elastin, removing some of the fat cells in the subcutaneous tissue. These effects of the device make the skin firmer and tighter, reducing the volume and degree of cellulite.
