Skin pigmentation disorders are a group of skin diseases in which we have either too much or too little of the skin pigment melanin.
They can cover a limited area or the whole surface of the skin. The deeper part of the skin contains pigment cells, melanocytes, which produce the skin pigment melanin stored in special cisternae, melanosomes.
Removing pigmentations
Before removing pigmentations on the skin, we should always first diagnose and, if possible, remove the underlying causes. Removing any pigmentation on the skin without first consulting a doctor or dermatologist is a dangerous thing to do, which at best will not be successful, and at worst may aggravate the underlying disease or even harm the general health of patients.
Before removing hyperpigmentation in the skin (skin bleaching), it is very useful to determine whether we are dealing with increased pigmentation in the upper – epidermal or deeper – dermal part of the skin. For this purpose, dermatologists use the Wood’s lamp, which serves as an orientation and partly also to predict the success of skin bleaching, which is more successful in epidermal hyperpigmentation. We can distinguish between bleaching procedures that remove excess skin pigment and those that act on pigment cells – melanocytes – in terms of preventing the formation of melanin or permanently destroying them. Excess melanin can be removed by chemical peels, microdermabrasion or light sources such as PDL laser or Thulium laser and IPL technology. When melanin in the skin resembles the form of tattoos, as is the case with excessive skin pigmentation that occurs after inflammation, skin bleaching procedures with light sources can also be very successful. However, if the melanin is newly formed, as in the case of melasma, patient application of bleaching creams, SPF creams and occasional Thulium laser treatments are necessary.
