Lactic acid fillers – Sculptra, Lanluma, Olidia

Biocompatible and biodegradable poly-L-lactic acid

Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) is a unique filler for the face and other parts of the body that replaces the loss of volume of the skin and subcutaneous tissue that occurs during ageing. The filler is scientifically designed to stimulate the natural growth of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid and therefore restore volume to the skin lost over the years. The effect lasts up to two years, in some cases longer. It belongs to the group of so-called stimulating fillers, which use the body’s own mechanisms to replenish the amount of collagen in the skin and, according to this principle, restore the skin’s volume. Lactic acid can restore freshness and youthfulness to the skin.

Traditional dermal fillers commonly used today are mostly made of hyaluronic acid (and additives). They work by replacing lost volume with hyaluronic acid, thus smoothing wrinkles and replacing missing volume. The duration of action of such fillers is usually between six months and a year, rarely longer. They can be injected all over the face, including around the eyes and on the forehead and lips.

PLLA fillers (Sculptra®, Lanluma® or Olidia®) work differently. They restore lost volume by stimulating the growth of your own collagen, allowing you to gradually achieve a naturally youthful facial appearance. PLLA can restore a more youthful, natural appearance that lasts up to two years and even longer in most cases.

Where is PLLA used?

It is used to reduce shallow and deep wrinkles on the face, sagging cheeks and sunken areas on the temples. It is not recommended for use on the forehead, around the eyes and mouth. In a special dilution, it can also be used on the décolleté, and elsewhere on the body (upper arms, abdomen, thighs) to rejuvenate the skin.

How does PLLA work?

Lactic acid can restore freshness and youthfulness to the skin.

PLLA stimulates the activity of the cells in the dermis – fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin and hyaluronic acid, which in turns trigger skin renewal. PLLA is eventually broken down in the skin into water and carbon dioxide, while the collagen fibre framework remains and gives the face its volume and youthful appearance over time. The synthesis of collagen in the skin is a process that takes several months, which is why the best effects can be observed 4-6 weeks after the procedure. The effect then increases, peaking at the sixth month after the procedure and lasting 14-25 months or even longer, depending on the individual characteristics of the person.

To achieve visible and stable effects, we recommend 2-3 repeated injections of PLLA with an interval of 1-2 months.

PLLA is suitable for:

  • deep wrinkles between the nose and mouth, also called laugh lines,
  • lines under the corners of the mouth (marionette lines),
  • wrinkles on the chin,
  • other facial wrinkles,
  • restoration of facial volume and correction of sagging cheeks and facial contours,
  • smoothing of acne scars,
  • rejuvenation of the skin surface on the face, décolleté and upper arms, abdomen, thighs.

The results look completely natural!

PLLA helps the body to gradually increase the amount of its own collagen. With PLLA filler, you can expect to see a subtle, permanent reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and achieve a more youthful appearance. Results will be noticeable immediately after the procedure in correcting facial volume, and you can expect further improvement in the skin’s surface after approximately 4 -6 weeks. Typically, 2 to 3 applications are required to achieve the expected results. Once your PLLA rejuvenation procedure is complete, the results will last up to 2 years in most cases, while in some even longer.

Important safety notes

PLLA should not be used if you are allergic to any of the ingredients of the product or if you have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring. PLLA should not be injected into the skin while you have a skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area. The product must not be injected into the lip area. Application to the skin near the eyes is not recommended.

Adverse effects may include discomfort at the injection site, redness, bruising, bleeding, itching and swelling. Other side effects may include small indentations under the skin, sometimes felt when pressure is applied to the area under treatment. Among the reported effects is also the occurrence of small subcutaneous indurations, which may appear later, possibly in association with inflammation. The latter can be resolved with further treatment by a physician.

IMPORTANT: After injection of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), deep massage of the areas where the filler is located is necessary for the first 5 days. Your doctor will give you all the necessary instructions. The massage allows the PLLA to be distributed evenly in the subcutaneous tissue.
