Profhilo is an aesthetic dermatological therapy improving the overall characteristics of the skin. It works at the first signs of skin ageing by stimulating the formation of the skin’s own connective tissue made of collagen and elastin, smoothing wrinkles and restoring the skin’s thickness, giving it a taut, fresh and youthful appearance.
It differs from conventional hyaluronic acid fillers which work by replacing the volume of the subcutaneous tissue or deeper layers of the skin and do not have a pronounced effect on the skin’s moisture and stimulate the renewal of its connective tissue.
Profhilo contains a hybrid hyaluronic acid complex of long and short hyaluronic acid chains, which is metabolised by the skin’s own enzymes within one to two days, and therefore has no side effects, which may rarely occur after injection of hyaluronic fillers. During this short period, it stimulates processes in the skin that allow the formation of new skin connective tissue.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a component of the skin’s extracellular space – the connective tissue that fills the space between cells. In addition to collagen and elastin fibres, hyaluronic acid is an important component which has the property of binding water, as it binds 1000 times more water than its own weight. Hyaluronic acid makes the skin soft, resistant to external forces and increases its moisture level.
As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin decreases, leading to wrinkles, dry skin that looks dull and regenerates more slowly. In the past, many hyaluronic acid fillers have been made to smooth wrinkles and lines on the face and other parts of the body. The use of such fillers restores the lost volume of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, while making a minimal impact on the quality of the skin surface. The hyaluronic acid in the fillers is slightly modified by cross-linking its chains, making it resistant to the enzyme hyaluronidase, which breaks it down. Without cross-linking of the chains with chemical linkers, the effect of the hyaluronic acid filler would disappear within two days.
How does Profhilo work?
Although it is made from hyaluronic acid, Profhilo is not similar in action to hyaluronic acid fillers. It consists of very highly concentrated hyaluronic acid with short and long chains that are linked together by heat to form complexes without chemical binders, as is typical of fillers. Profhilo works to improve the skin’s moisture and quality by stimulating the activity of fibroblasts, the cells in the skin that form collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Profhilo acts specifically on the first signs of skin ageing, which are manifested as a loss of elasticity and tone due to a reduction in the activity of fibroblasts and the synthesis of connective tissue and hyaluronic acid in the intercellular space.
How is Profhilo injected?
The Profhilo injection procedure is one of the non-invasive procedures known as skin bio revitalisation. It uses the body’s own substances (vitamins, minerals, hyaluronic acid, peptides, etc.) to stimulate the healing and repair process. The procedure is carried out using fine needles by injecting Profhilo into the upper part of the skin. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which act on an isolated problem, such as wrinkles around the nose, chin, eyes, etc., Profhilo bio revitalisation targets the entire surface of the skin on the face, neck or hands, refreshing and rejuvenating it comprehensively.
How is Profhilo different from other mesotherapy/bio revitalization products?
Profhilo has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid on the market. Hyaluronic acid binds water to itself after injection, which allows Profhilo to be evenly distributed in the skin due to diffusion. On each side of the cheek, injection into only 5 selected spots is sufficient, from where it then spreads itself to the entire cheek. Hyaluronic acid mesotherapy requires more than 10 injections on each cheek, which is uncomfortable, painful and increases the chance of bruising.
The method of injecting Profhilo is called the BAP technique, which is an acronym for Bio Aesthetic Points. The latter have been selected using advanced imaging technologies to identify the best injection points from which to ensure that the Profhilo spreads evenly over the facial skin. At the same time, they are safe as they are the furthest away from facial nerves, arteries or veins.
How does Profhilo work on the skin?
The composition of low and high molecular weight hyaluronic acids, which are linked into stable hybrid complexes by heat, without chemical linkers between the chains as in fillers, allows Profhilo to be absorbed rapidly when injected superficially into the skin, without the appearance of long-lasting bulges. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid acts on receptors in the wall of fibroblasts and keratinocytes, stimulating them to produce the skin’s own hyaluronic acid. The high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in Profhilo has the ability to bind more water, which allows skin hydration and the protective function of the intercellular connective tissue, increasing the skin’s resistance and elasticity to external forces.
The Profhilo injection process takes about 20 minutes. After the procedure, redness of the skin may be observed at the injection sites, which in most cases disappears after an hour or two.
What are the effects of Profhilo on the skin?
The effect occurs quickly after injection and works on :
- fine lines and wrinkles
- reduction of deep wrinkles, nasolabial folds and chin lines
- skin rejuvenation
- sagging skin
- improves skin tone
- improves skin hydration
- reduces wrinkles around the upper and lower lip area
- reduces wrinkles around the eye area
When are the effects of Profhilo visible?
The effects are visible immediately after just one injection of Profhilo and increase over time. They are additionally noticeable after a second treatment, which we perform after a month. Although Profhilo is not injected in the same way as conventional hyaluronic acid fillers, it also improves the deep wrinkles that run from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth, which many people find distracting over the years and want to make less noticeable.
Which areas can be improved with Profhilo:
- face
- cheeks
- neck
- knees
- backs of hands
- décolleté
- upper arms
- insteps
Tip: most people need a repeat of Profhilo once a year. This restores the skin’s rejuvenating effect and keeps it in its best condition before the signs of ageing reappear.
What are the advantages of Profhilo therapy compared to hyaluronic acid fillers?
- Profhilo injections are a non-invasive procedure that can rejuvenate the skin of the face, neck or other areas evenly and give a natural appearance.
- The hyaluronic acid in Profhilo is identical to the skin’s own hyaluronic acid, so there are no side-effects, which can rarely occur with hyaluronic acid fillers due to the immune system’s allergic reaction to the additives in the fillers.
- Side effects with Profhilo are associated exclusively with the area of injection into the skin – pain on injection, minor swelling, transient redness and bruising (rare).
- Effects are visible immediately after the first treatment. In persons who have advanced skin changes due to sun exposure and/or ageing, improvement will be noticeable after the second treatment.
- A non-surgical procedure that does not require recovery and which quickly improves fine lines and wrinkles.
- The effect is reversible and gradually fades within a year. This means that maintenance of the skin condition is required with repeat treatments every 3-12 months, depending on the initial skin condition.
- It can be performed on the face, neck, upper arms, chest, knees, backs of hands and insteps.
What are the side effects associated with Profhilo injection?
Side effects are similar to all therapies where bioidentical substances are injected into the skin. These are :
- swelling
- bruising
- redness
- pain
All of these side effects are limited to the injection site and disappear without further treatment. No strenuous physical activity is advised for up to 24 hours after the procedure.
Who is a suitable candidate for Profhilo?
Profhilo is a good choice for people who:
- want to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the face without surgery or intensive dermatological procedures,
- want firmer skin,
- want a quick improvement in skin condition without procedures that take longer to recover from,
- have deep wrinkles running from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth, or other signs of ageing skin on the face,
- have a lack of fatty tissue in certain areas of the face, or where this has diminished over the years,
- want radiant skin,
- want to prevent the appearance of lean skin and loss of skin volume,
- want to improve the appearance of the skin on the neck, décolleté, backs of the hands, knees, upper arms and shoulders, in addition to the face.
How long does Profhilo last?
Profhilo is one of the longest-lasting dermal fillers on the market, with effects lasting up to 12 months. In most cases, two treatments should be performed at the beginning, 28 days apart. The effect is already visible after the first treatment, and increases further after the second treatment. The initial condition of the skin determines how long the effect will be noticeable. For persons with less pronounced signs of ageing, the effect is visible for up to 12 months. In the case of significant thinning of the skin, impaired tone, dryness and wrinkles, the procedure should be repeated at an earlier stage. Upon examination by the dermatologist at the Derma Center Rogaška / Maribor, you will be advised on the most appropriate means of maintaining the condition of your skin and the periodicity of the Profhilo re-injections.
Is Profhilo suitable for you?
Profhilo is also suitable for first-time users of skin rejuvenation therapies performed by injection into the skin, or for those who do not wish to undergo surgical procedures or intensive dermatological therapies requiring several days of post-procedure recovery. In comparison, Profhilo therapy is safe and has no long-term complications. Due to its special characteristics, the therapy is performed with a small number of injections into the skin, which is beneficial for people who dislike needles.
Profhilo is a good choice if you have decided to use fillers to reduce fine lines and wrinkles on the skin.
Profhilo is NOT the best option for people who want a long-lasting effect on certain parts of the face. If you are seeking this type of improvement, it is better to opt for a different type of filler, a so-called stimulating filler such as Sculptra.
